Ostara - The Balance of Spring
Share
Spring Equinox | Around 20–21 March
Dear reader,
There comes a moment each year when the world finds perfect balance.
Day and night stand equal beneath the sky. Light and darkness share the same space, neither outweighing the other.
This is Ostara, the Spring Equinox.
Around the 20th or 21st of March, the wheel of the year reaches one of its quiet turning points. Winter loosens its grip, and the earth begins to stir with unmistakable signs of life. Buds appear on branches that only weeks before seemed lifeless. Birds return to hedgerows with lively morning songs. The air carries a softness that whispers of warmer days ahead.
Across many ancient traditions, this moment of balance was celebrated as a festival of renewal. Eggs symbolised new life, seeds promised future harvests, and the hare became a messenger of fertility and vitality.
Ostara reminds us that nature never rushes its transformation. Growth unfolds gradually, in its own time.
Just as the earth begins to bloom again, we too are invited to step gently into a new season.
A Season of Balance
The energy of Ostara is not one of urgency, but of harmony.
It is the meeting point between the stillness of winter and the vibrant expansion of spring. A moment to pause and consider where balance lives within our own lives.
Where have you been giving too much of your energy?
Where might a little more light be welcome?
The equinox invites us to bring our lives back into alignment, much like the day and night above us.
A Simple Ostara Ritual
If the weather allows, step outside for a few quiet moments. Notice the subtle changes happening all around you. The scent of damp soil, the colour returning to trees, the soft warmth of the sun lingering a little longer than before.
Bring a small symbol of the season indoors. Perhaps a flower, a feather, or even a small bowl filled with seeds.
Settle somewhere calm with a warm cup of tea and take a few slow breaths.
If you have a singing bowl, gently strike it once and allow the sound to settle the space around you. Sound has long been used in ritual to mark a moment of transition, and the soft resonance can help centre the mind.
Then ask yourself quietly:
What would I like to nurture in this new season?
Write down whatever comes to mind. Like seeds planted in fertile soil, even the smallest intention can grow with care.
Tea & Tarot Reflection
Brew your favourite tea and shuffle your tarot deck slowly.
Ask your cards:
What is ready to grow in my life this spring?
Draw one card and sit with its message for a moment. You may wish to journal about the images or feelings that arise, or simply hold the thought gently as the season unfolds.
Some people like to keep the card somewhere visible during the weeks that follow, allowing its message to guide them quietly.
A Small Ostara Altar
You might choose to create a tiny seasonal space in your home for the equinox. It does not need to be elaborate.
A candle for returning light.
A crystal for fresh energy.
A small dish of seeds or blossoms for growth.
These small gestures remind us that we are part of the same living cycle as the natural world.
An Ostara Affirmation
I welcome balance, renewal, and the gentle unfolding of new beginnings.
The wheel has turned once more, dear reader. Spring has arrived, carrying with it the quiet promise that life, in all its forms, is always ready to begin again.
